Europe > Italy

Venice

Venice is one of the most unique cities in the World and a favorite of mine. It was built on 118 islands connected by 160 canals and more than 400 bridges. Everyone says its waters are polluted and dirty, however on a trip we took just a few years ago I didn't find it so. In fact I was surprised at how clean it appeared all things considered. It can be expensive, but there are lots of nice places to stay through its back alleys and romantic streets.

Since there are no cars allowed in the city, it's best to use the Vaporetti to get around. These slow water "buses" are fun, however a little confusing to learn the routes at first. Take a vaporetti to St Mark's Square where you'll find lots of outdoor Cafes, each with "dueling" orchestras. The view from the tower at St Mark's is nice at sunset. Take a stroll over the Rialto Bridge Area, here you will find lots of incredible shopping. If you're a "travel shopper" and like to buy souvenirs and gifts this is the place! One thing I noticed traveling around Italy if you find something that you're interested in purchasing, but it! Unlike other areas of Europe it's not easy to find the same things in each town. Each area has its own uniqueness and many things aren't duplicated everywhere else.

Florence

Florence is a city of art and architecture. There are many great cathedrals, museums, galleries and Palaces. The surrounding areas of Florence include beautiful country-side, vineyards and incredible rolling hills. It's an area that deserves a day or two to visit.

Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre the "five lands" invites you to step back in time. A very unique place, it's a place to go enjoy and relax. Four of the five villages can not be reached by car. I recommend getting there by train. Take the train to Monterosso one of the Villages. If you're in better than average walking shape I highly recommend taking a full day to walk thru the mountain trails to each village. Start out early in the morning taking the train to one end of the five villages. Wear "good" walking shoes. Take some water for drinking and don't forget your camera. You can stop in Vernazza in the middle and enjoy lunch by the water and relax then go on and finish your day with a visit to the other two. Don't miss this if your in the area you'll thank me when you get back. If you took lots of pictures I know you'll enjoy showing them to your family and friends for years to come.

Sorrento
Sorrento has long been a very beautiful, romantic and famous resort area. This is a great place to stay and take a day trip to Mt Vesuvius, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. Pompeii once a Roman City is a must see in my book! In 79 AD the volcano erupted and buried the town. The ruins have been excavated. Taking the walking tour you will see and learn things that are so interesting you will find it was well worth you time.

Rome
Rome like Paris is a big, busy city (watch out for cars when walking). It's the political, cultural, and religious heart of Italy. It can also be a romantic place to visit. If you walk around the area of the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain at night you will find lots of nice restaurants to have dinner and it's an interesting place to people watch. One of the best walking tours I've ever taken started at the Colosseum. It's an ancient stadium where the gladiators fought and Christians were martyred. We moved on to the Forum near by. This area was once the center of the Roman Empire. Today it is a broad area of ruins and many stories. The tour ended at the Pantheon a remarkably preserved domed Roman building. It was a slow paced, very casual walking tour where you can see and learn a lot of great things. Another full day tour that's a must do is visit Vatican City. Here you will see St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museum. In the Sistine Chapel you will be overwhelmed by Michelangelo's creation painted on the ceiling and walls.
