Europe > France

Food, culture, language, and history, France is rich with all of them. Most people visit France in July and August. Temperatures in these months range from mid 70's to mid 80's in the Rivera. Unless you have children in school and need to tailor your vacation to these summer months I highly recommend April, May, and September instead. The weather then is beautiful and there are far less crowds.

France has some of the finest transportation systems in the world. At all of the train stations you will find information booths, they are very helpful.

The Metro in Paris is quite different. Most of the ticket operators I've found are not helpful and if you're not familiar with the system it can be overwhelming. I recommend prior to leaving for your trip you get a copy of the metro map and review where you're going and staying. This will take a lot of stress out of your trip. The Metro, by far is one of the world's greatest subways and the best way to get around Paris.

Paris
If it is possible to fall in love with a big city, Paris is it! The architecture, cuisine, fashion, cathedrals, and museums are all incredible. This "City of Lights" is perhaps the most romantic city in the World. I recommend you visit all the attractions and museums first thing in the morning. Leave your afternoons for eating, relaxing and people watching. There is never a shortage of things to do in this city, and there all a must see! I was fortunate enough to have made many trips to France and Paris over the past 20 years. I do not speak the language, and it has never stopped me from enjoying my trips. A few travel tips from me, learn how to ask the following "Excuse me, do you speak English". In Paris most Parisians do but you'll never know it unless you ask. Learn to ask where the bathrooms are located and a must is asking for the check in a restaurant. The French want you to tell them when you're done and want to leave. Always throw in lots of "please" and "thank you" and you will do fine. Note that traveling around the Country especially in the small towns you will find fewer people know any English or speak it. A translation book is a must for these areas.

The Loire Valley

Over 100 Majestic Chateaux's can be found spread throughout the Loire River Valley. If you're not going to travel by car and take lots of time, I highly recommend a Tour. You need a few days to see some of the most famous, and beautiful ones. The Chateau Chenonceaux, Amboise, Chambord, Blois, and Villandry are all awesome and offer something different to see.

Normandy

This area along the English Channel is most known for the D-Day landing in World War II. When there do visit the Omaha Beach area and the Memorial. I know for me it was a very moving experience. Rouen and Bayeux were both places I'd recommend. There are lots of steeples, medieval architecture, museums, and gothic churches to see and visit yet all very nice and quaint.

The Eastern Wine Country
Lyon, Dijon, Alsace, and The Champagne District are loaded with restaurants offering fine cuisine and numerous wines. If you have the time take a tour, this is a great experience. Seeing the vineyards, wine cellars, learning all about them will make you appreciate your next glass of champagne or wine from France.
