California

I don't believe there is a more diverse state. There are so many things to see and do all year. I've lived in California for the past thirty-nine years. I've been fortunate to live in both Northern and Southern California. For first time visitors I'll try to point out a few things and areas you don't want to miss, starting in the north.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

If you are driving and have lots of time HWY 101 is the most scenic route along the Pacific Ocean. Near the Oregon bounder on 101 you will find the Redwood National Park. This is the home of the "Trees of Mystery" an unusual collection and grove of ancient redwoods. To the east on HWY 5 you will come to Mt. Shasta and Lake Shasta. If you like to fish, swim, or water ski this is the place for you.

If you're looking for a fun family vacation or reunion, try renting a houseboat. Kids of all ages love it! South of Shasta on the east side you will find Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is another good area for fishing and water skiing in the summer. Snow skiing is super in the winter. On the Nevada side of the lake you have all the Gambling Casinos you could want to visit. Heading south and west we come to one of my favorite places to visit Sonoma and Napa, California's Wine Country. Here you can sit, relax, have a picnic and taste wine all day. I don't think you could possible tour all the winery's in two or three days. Away We Go Travel can help you arrange a vacation to this area and include a trip on the Wine Train or a Hot Air Balloon flight. If you just want to relax there are some good spas in this are too.

SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco is just a few hours drive south of Napa. When you think of San Francisco you think of the famous Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and home of the Forty-niners football team. One thing many people miss when visiting San Francisco is a cruise and tour of Alcatraz.
Tickets are sold at Fisherman's Wharf and it is only a few hours to see the infamous prison. The National Park service does a great job with the tour.

Heading south on old route 1 you would pass some of the prettiest beach areas in the state. They are Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Carmel. If you like to swim in the ocean, be prepared the water never really gets warm. If you're into swimming, surfing, and body surfing Southern California has warmer weather and warmer water.

NATIONAL PARKS

To the east off HWY 395 you will come to Sierra National Forest, Kings Canyon, Sequoia National Park and Yosemite. All of these areas deserve a few days of your vacation time. Plan to camp or rent a motor home, enjoy the outdoors. If you're not the camping type we recommend the Ahwahnee Lodge, right in the heart of Yosemite. Reservations need to me made well in advance as this location is very unique and popular.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

In Southern California you will find Los Angles. Los Angles is made up of so many surrounding cities and communities I can't begin to list them all. A few of the places visitors don't want to miss include, Universal Studios and Entertainment Park. You can't miss Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Grauman's Chinese Theatre. A trip to Pasadena on New Years day is a must at least once to see the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game.

There is Venice Beach for the not so ordinary and Malibu for the rich and famous. South of Los Angles is Anaheim home of Disney Land. There is so much to see I'll cover it more in the family vacation section. Heading east again out HWY 10 is Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, and Palm Desert a golfer's paradise.

SAN DIEGO

At the southern end of the state you will find San Diego. Home of "Away We Go Travel". This is my favorite part of the state. We have great beaches, good weather year round and lots of fun things to do.

You can swim water ski, sun bath, scuba dive, and fish. You can take a balloon flight or paraglide over Torrey Pines State Reserve. You can visit Balboa Park, the World Famous Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Lego Land, La Costa and Coronado. If you visit in June you can see a large State Fair in Del Mar. If you visit later in the month you can try your luck at the Del Mar Race Track.

When you enter the down town area of the city you can take a Harbor Cruise, see Old Town, Gas lamp Quarter or Seaport Village, where you can shop till you drop. I'm sure I haven't covered half of the things you can see or do in California. Look for future articles covering different area's of the state. If you want a tour, private tour, drive or camping vacation, Away We Go Travel can help you arrange it all.
